Eat More Sulfur-containing Foods

Sulfur is needed for the repair and rebuilding of bone, cartilage, and connective tissue. It also aids in the absorption of calcium. So, adequate intake of sulfur is important for arthritis sufferers. Sulfur-containing foods include asparagus, eggs, garlic and onions.

Consume Foods Containing the Amino Acid Histidine

Many arthritis patients have high levels of copper and iron in their bodies. Iron is suspected of being involved in pain, swelling, and joint destruction. Histidine helps the body to remove excess metals. Foods that contain histidine include rice, wheat, and rye.

Eat Fresh Pineapple Regularly

Pineapple contains an enzyme called bromelain which is excellent for reducing inflammation. Bromelain is destroyed when pineapple is cooked and frozen. So, it must be eaten fresh.

Avoid Nightshade Vegetables

Nightshade vegetables contain substance called solanine. Solanine may cause pain and discomfort. Those who are suffering from arthritis are highly sensitive to solanine. Nightshade vegetables include peppers, eggplants, tomatoes and white potatoes.

Eat Less Animal Fats, Less Sugar, Less Salt

Arthritis sufferers should reduce the intake of animal fats. It is a good idea to avoid consuming milk, diary products, red meat, citrus fruits and high sugar foods.

Get Regular Moderate Exercise

Exercise is essential for reducing pain and retarding joint deterioration. Exercise that does not put stress on affected joints is valuable for many types of arthritis. Such exercise includes bicycle riding, walking, and water exercise.

Lose Your Weight

Overweight can cause and aggravate osteoarthritis. Overweight sufferers should lose the excess pounds.
